Chapter Six

The cracks that had formed on Philip’s body were expanding, spreading into tiny canyons that covered his chest, his face, his arms. It looked as though he was deteriorating. Deflating and falling apart.

I had to look away when his ear detached and fell to the bedspread, dust sprinkling behind as it tumbled.

“What did I do?” I asked for possibly the eighth time, looking to Hywel for a desperate answer, but the guy was still staring at the body of Philip, his face nearly as white.

“I have no idea,” he shook his head swallowing slow enough that I was sure he was pushing the bile back down. I’d had to do that a few times, too.

“You were born here, Hy…” I began, my hands wringing as I began to pace, casting side glances at the body and then the Siren who was smiling mischievously as he poked him causing the other ear and then a finger to detach.

“Born here?” Hy’s voice was squeaking with his high-pitched panic. “People dying and turning to stone after a good fuck is not normal, even for the Above. And trust me, I’ve bedded my fair share of Mer, and this has never happened before.”

“Okay,” I said, still pacing and doing my best not to explode. “But what about the mortals. You’ve been with them right?”

He nodded, “and Mer, and mortals and Mer, and Pirates. I am not a stranger to pleasure, Zan.”

It wasn’t a surprise, he had told me as much before but it still sat funny on my chest. I shook my head. Now was not the time to have my first stint of monogamous jealousy.

“None of them have…” Hy stalled, swallowed again and had to turn away as Caspian poked at Philips still erect penis, and it fell off.

“This is the problem with your Mer-made Pirates, Zan,” Caspian said with a laugh, giving me a look before he went back to poking at the body. “They are all weak. Hell, you both are. One dead body and you are both sobbing and vomiting in the corner.”

“I’m not weak,” I snapped, forcing my hands from shaking to pound against my thighs. Caspian laughed, the severed phallus of Phillip in his hand as he stepped closer to me.

“Could have fooled me with those tear-streaked cheeks. You would think someone had kidnapped your daddy.”

I stiffened and fumes. Hywel’s hair flashing in my peripheral as he looked between Caspian and me.

“Here,” Caspian continued, not taking the grind of my teeth as an answer. “It’s your kill. You should have the trophy.”

He held the stone dick out to me, the surface as cracked and crumbling as the rest of him. Or what remained. It was like watching a thousand years of erosion in one minute. On one body.

Now I was slowly swallowing my nerves back down.

“It wasn’t a kill. It was an accident.”

Caspian’s eyes widened. The stone staff still held between us as he began to laugh. The low, hate-filled sound rattled the windows and sent a few more cracks over Phillip’s body.
